What is Shares Trading?

What is shares CFD trading

CFD is a contract for the difference in prices. The difference between CFD and share trading is that selling or buying a financial instrument with a CFD does not imply the documentation of rights to it (i.e. you certainly have the right to the concluded contract, but you do not have rights to the subject matter of this contract).

That is, if you have, for example, entered into a CFD contract to buy 1000 Tesla shares, you will not become their owner, and these shares will not pass to you. The birthplace of CFD is Great Britain. It was in London, in the early 1990s, that contracts for difference were first used by Brian Keelan and Jon Wood, employees of UBS Warburg. Their motivation was that, under British law, the sale and purchase of shares itself are linked to the need to pay significant tax. CFD contracts were created to simplify the work related to the procedures of purchase and sale. To be more precise, they were created for hedging shares at the London Stock Exchange, but they are also perfectly suited for speculative trading. In practice, trading in such instruments is almost the same as trading in real shares with a few exceptions:

  • The trader only enters into a contract regarding the price, and the asset is not transferred to him;
  • As a result, there are no dividends when buying a CFD;
  • The process of executing trades takes place only between a broker and a trader.
As a result, traders can work with shares on more simplified and affordable terms:
  • It is possible to trade with a small deposit and huge leverage;
  • There are no restrictions on short positions;
  • Instant opening and closing of trades;
  • There is no need to be a qualified investor.
Online stock trading
Shares are securities that give their owners the right to receive profits from the turnover of the company, dividends, or are simply investments. Basically, like in another type of trading, the investor receives income by buying shares at a low price and selling them at a higher one. The value of shares is tied to the income of the company. If things are going well, the value of securities increases. It is happening gradually. Sharp spikes can be observed only in the period before, or after the earnings reports. Simply put, an investor will have to wait to make a good difference between the cost of buying and selling to make a profit. In some cases, the wait lasts for months. So why do companies issue shares? Why should the founders share their profits with thousands of people when they can keep everything? The reason is that at some point any company needs additional funding. To get the necessary funds, management can either borrow them in one way or another or raise some part of the company through a sale - that is, by issuing shares. A company may borrow money either from banks or by issuing bonds. Both methods relate to debt financing. By contrast, the issue of shares is called equity financing. This latter option is particularly advantageous for a company because it does not have to either pay back the money it has received or pay interest on its use. Learning how to be an online stock trader, one should consider the following factors that affect share prices:
  • Management changes: When and for what reason they occur. Nominees for new top managers on the board will also play an important role.
  • Quarterly earnings reports. Share prices are very sensitive to data on companies' profits, their revenues, growth forecasts (opening of new representative offices), investments developed and attracted, and other financial indicators. Publication of these data will immediately affect the price, as the company's reports are the most important indicator of transparency and stability of its work.
  • Changing credit ratings. As soon as reputable international agencies (Fitch, Moody's, S&P) issue ratings of companies, assessing their stability in the market, it immediately affects the value of their securities.
  • Change of stock ratings. They are issued by large investment banks, assigning ratings to entire sectors of the market, as well as to shares of individual corporations, and thus setting their target value. The ratings of Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and others enjoy great authority.
  • Mergers and acquisitions reports. The value of shares increases with the merger of promising corporations.
  • Allegations, investigations, lawsuits, and fines. Needless to say, all these events drop the price of shares.
The difference between a stock trading and forex is that there is no twenty-four-hour trading. Another difference is the peculiarities of price fluctuations. Depending on the performance of a company, its shares may rise in price by thousands of dollars in a few days, as well as fall. The price movement of different currencies is not as rapid. Only in case of serious economic turmoil may the rate collapse, but it still can not change the value of the currency in the same way as it happens with stocks.
